Caption: Milk Way over an astronomical observatory. 360-degree panorama showing the Milky Way arching across the night sky above the Paranal platform, on the Cerro Paranal mountain, Chile, home of ESO's (European Southern Observatory) Very Large Telescope (VLT) array. This image was made from 37 individual images taken in the early morning with a total exposure time of about 30 minutes. The Moon is just rising and the zodiacal light shines above it. The open telescope domes of the world's most advanced ground-based astronomical observatory are all visible: the four smaller 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes, and the four giant 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes.
