This involves scanning the photovoltaic cell with a focused light beam to produce the results seen on the screen (upper centre). By measuring the amplitude and phase of the electrical current generated by the light being shone on the photovoltaic cell, it is possible to locate defects in the semiconductor structure. Photovoltaic cells are the basic components of solar panels. They contain silicon, a semiconductor material that can absorb energy from sunlight and convert it into an electrical current.
