Caption: Gus Grissom (1926-1967), American astronaut. Virgil Ivan (Gus) Grissom was the second American in space and the first person to go into space twice. In 1959 he was one of the original group of seven astronauts to be chosen for the Project Mercury program. On 21st July 1961 he piloted the Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft on the Mercury-Redstone 4 mission and became the second American in space. In 1967 he was killed along with Ed White and Roger Chaffee during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission.
