Caption: Paranal Observatory, Cerro Paranal, Chile, artwork. The four telescopes (Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun) in the large buildings make up the Very Large Telescope (VLT). These 8.2-metre mirror telescopes have their images combined by interferometry to produce an image equal to that obtained by one 16 metre diameter mirror. By using the VLT 1.8 metre auxiliary telescopes (within red circle) in different configurations astronomers have been able to produce an image equal to that obtained by a telescope almost 100 metres in diameter (the area covered by the red circle).
