Caption: Parasitic fungus (Cordyceps militaris) growing on a dead larva. This fungus, also called scarlet caterpillar fungus, infects the larvae and pupae of butterflies and moths. The fungus feeds on, and replaces, the insides of the insect. It then grows a fruiting body (orange) of 2-5 centimetres in height to disperse reproductive spores.
