Caption: Parasitic fungus (Cordyceps militaris) growing on a pupa buried in the soil. This fungus, also called scarlet caterpillar fungus, infects the larvae and pupae of butterflies and moths. The fungus feeds on, and replaces, the insides of the insect. Two fruiting bodies (orange) are seen. These can reach 2-5 centimetres in height and serve to disperse reproductive spores.
