Caption: Blood-filled foetal aorta. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fracture through a foetal aorta filled with red blood cells (erythrocytes, red). The aorta is the body's main artery. It carries blood from the heart around the body. The vessel wall consists of an inner layer of endothelial cells (tunica intima, purple, rippled) surrounded by a muscle wall (tunica media, yellow), which contracts to squeeze blood along the aorta. Surrounding the aorta is connective tissue. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
