Caption: Production & decay of sigma particles in the 72- inch bubble chamber at Lawrence Berkeley Laborat- ory. The two tracks travelling up from the foot of the photo are negative kaons, which interact with protons in the chamber's liquid to produce typical short, kinked tracks of a positive sigma (bottom centre) & a negative sigma (top centre), along with negative & positive pions. The positive sigma decays to a positive pion & a neutron (unseen because it's neutral). The negative sigma decays to a negative pion & a neutron. Negative particles curve clockwise, positive ones anticlockwise in the chamber's magnetic field. The photo has been 'cleaned up' to remove non-relevant tracks).
