Caption: Deceiver mushrooms (Laccaria laccata) growing in a field. These are the edible fruiting bodies of this fungus. They are found growing in clusters (troops) in woodlands or on heaths. Reproductive spores develop in the gills, the ribbed structures seen underneath the caps. When ripe, they drop and are carried on the wind to develop into a new fungal body or mycelium. Variations in cap colour deceive people into mis-identifying these fungi.
