Caption: Ear pick fungus (Auriscalpium vulgare). The structure seen is the fruiting body or mushroom which disperses the reproductive spores of this fungus. This is an example of a toothed fungus, so-called because it has tiny hairs or spines on the underside of the cap. These spines are where the ripe spores collect to be carried off by the wind. This fungus feeds on buried, decaying pine cones.
