Caption: Soviet perestroika economists. Abel Gyozevich Aganbegan (born 1932) and Tatyana Ivanovna Zaslavskaya (born 1927), Soviet economic theorists. Both were working at the Novosibirsk Institute of Economics in the late 1980s, studying the economics and sociology of the Russian state. They studied the economy from a sociological perspective, entirely contrary to orthodox Marxist philosophy. This work was influential on the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and led in part to his policy of 'perestroika', or restructuring of the political and economic system. Photographed at Novosibirsk, Russia, in 1986.
