Caption: Pavel Sergeyevich Aleksandrov (1896-1982) and Boris Alekseevich Pasynkov (b.1937), Soviet mathematicians. Aleksandrov (left) was highly influential in the development of set theory and topology in the middle of the 20th century. Paynkov was once a student of Aleksandrov, but is now himself professor of mathematics at Moscow State University. He led the development of a branch of topology called dimension theory. Photographed at Moscow in 1972.
