Caption: Cannon fungus. Macrophotograph of a fruiting body of the cannon fungus (Sphaerobolus stellatus). The fruiting body is a tiny puffball, less than 3 millimetres across. The outer layer has split open to reveal the spore sac inside. The puffball is capable of ejecting the spores over distances in excess of 4 metres. These can then form new fungal bodies on substrates such as dung, sticks and sawdust. Magnification: x7 at 35 mm size.
