Caption: Puffball mushroom. Immature fruiting body of the Calvatia excipuliformis fungus. In a puffball the reproductive spores develop and ripen inside an outer layer. This breaks away at maturity to free the spores inside. This fungus grows on waste ground, heaths, pastures and woodlands, feeding on decaying vegetation. Its puffball can grow to a height of 20 centimetres. Photographed on Bridgham Heath, Thetford Forest, Great Britain.
