Caption: Puffball mushrooms. Edible fruiting bodies of the Lycoperdon perlatum fungus. In a puffball the reproductive spores develop and ripen inside an outer layer. This breaks away at maturity to free the spores inside. In this fungus the spores are released through a pore on the inner surface of the puffball. This fungus grows in woodland soils, feeding on decaying vegetation. Photographed in Brackenhurst, New Forest, England.
