Caption: Otto Yulyevich Shmidt (1891-1956), Soviet geophysicist. Shmidt was born at Mogilev in Belarus and was educated at Kiev. After the 1917 revolution he served on several people's commissariats. He was a celebrated Arctic explorer, making many voyages in ice-breakers to establish new navigation routes in the winter above northern Russia. Shmidt was a keen proponent of higher education, edited the Great Soviet Encyclopaedia from 1924 to 1941 and was a founder of the Moscow Algebra School. Photographed in 1954.
