Caption: Mikhail Alekseevich Lavrentyev (1900-80), Soviet mathematician. Lavrentyev was born and educated at Kazan. In 1921 he moved to Moscow to study at the State University. His mathematical work related to conformal mappings and partial differential equations. These were applied to hydrodynamics, particularly the study explosions. His work led to the use of explosives in highly controlled demolition and excavation work. He helped found the Siberian academic town known as 'Akademgorodok' (now part of Novosibirsk) and founded the Institute of Hydrodynamics. Photographed in 1967.
