Caption: Seen at left, Vladimir Afanseevich Obruchev (1863-1956), Russian-Soviet geologist. Obuchev graduated from the Petersburg Mining institute and worked on methods of gold mining. He worked as an adviser to the Central Asian and Trans-Siberian Railway companies. He explored the Karakum Desert that covers most of Turkmenistan and made studies of Lake Baikal and the Lena River. For more than 50 years he dedicated himself to studying the geology of Siberia. In his later years he was also an author, writing some of Russia's first science fiction novels. Photographed at an International Geology Congress in Moscow in 1937.
