Caption: Common bird's nest fungus (Crucibulum laeve) growing in horse manure. Only the small, inedible fruiting bodies, less than one centimetre across, are visible. The fruiting bodies are puffballs, where the reproductive spores develop and ripen inside an outer layer (orange). This breaks away at maturity to reveal the inner spore sacs (white) which will disperse the spores. This fungus feeds on decaying vegetation.
