Caption: Helen Patricia Sharman (b.1963), first Briton in space. Sharman was born and educated at Sheffield, gaining a degree and PhD in chemistry. In1989 she was selected to become the UK's first person in space, from a total of 13,000 applicants. She flew on the Soyuz TM-12 mission to the Mir space station along with Anatoly Artsebarsky and Sergei Krikalev on 18 May 1991. Along with Artsebarsky, Sharman returned to Earth on the already-docked Soyuz TM-11 capsule on 26 May. Photographed in Moscow in April 1991.
