Caption: Andrei Andreyevich Markov (1856-1922), Russian mathematician. Markov was born at Ryazan and was educated at Saint Petersburg. In 1877, three years after graduating, Markov won a gold medal for his work on partial differential equations. He is best known for his theories on stochastic processes (statistically random processes). He developed the theory of the Markov Chain, a series of events in which the next state depends only on the current state and not previous states. Markov chains are used in almost every type of modern statistical modelling.
