Caption: Oleg Konstantinovich Antonov (1906-1984), Soviet aircraft designer. Antonov was born near Moscow but was educated at Leningrad. Soon after graduating he became head designer of the Moscow Glider Factory. In 1940 he was sent to work at the Yakovlev design bureau but after the war he established his own design bureau in Kiev. Antonov specialised in transport aircraft across a range of size and performance, starting with the An-2 biplane of 1946. In later years he oversaw the design and production of the An-124 Condor and the An-225 Mriya, the latter being the largest aeroplane ever to fly. Photographed in 1977.
