Caption: The world's largest aeroplane. Front view of an Antonov An-225 'Mriya' cargo aircraft with its nose loading door opened. The An-225 was built to carry the Soviet 'Buran' space shuttle and to replace the Myasishchev VM-T outsize item transport. The An-225 was based on the An-124 'Condor' cargo aircraft. Designers increased the length of the fuselage, extended the wings at the root and replaced the tail fin with a twin-tail design. They then added a pair of Ivchenko Progress D-18T turbofan engines, bringing the total to six, and added extra undercarriage bogies. The maximum payload is 250 tonnes and can be carried for 4000km, reducing payload extends the maximum range to 15,400km. So far only one An-225 has been completed, although a second is listed as 'nearing completion'. The An-225 is known to NATO as 'Cossack'. Photographed in 1993.
