Caption: Nikoloz Muskhelishvili (1891-1976), Georgian-Soviet mathematician. Muskhelivili was born at Tbilisi but was educated at St. Petersburg, graduating in 1914. After the 1917 revolution he was appointed a professor of mathematics at the university, but in 1920 returned to the Tbilisi State University to take the chair of mathematics. He is best known for his work in singular integral equations and in the theory of elasticity. He is often referred to by the Russian version of his name, Nikolai Ivanovich Muskhelishvili. Photographed in 1966.
