Caption: Ilya Vekua (1907-77), Georgian-Soviet mathematician. Vekua was born at Sheshelety in the Abkhasia region of Georgia. He studied at Tbilisi State University. His research areas included partial differential and simple integral equations and the theory of elastic shells. He was appointed a professor at Tbilisi in 1940, was the first rector of the Novosibirsk State University and served as president of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. Photographed in 1970.
