Caption: Ivan Georgievich Petrovsky (1901-1973), Russian-Soviet mathematician. Petrovsky was born at Sevsk and was educated at Moscow State University. His research was mainly into hyperbolic partial differential equations: he discovered topological regions in which the fundamental solutions of such equations vanishes, known as a Petrovsky lacuna. He taught at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics in Moscow and was president of Moscow State University from 1951-1973. Photographed in 1965.
