Caption: Boris Nikolaevich Petrov (1913-80), Russian-Soviet engineer. Petrov was born at Smolensk and was educated in Moscow. In 1939 he graduated from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. Soon afterward he joined the Problems of Control Institute, where he did research into automated control systems in aeronautics. His work in the theory of control systems, both automated and adaptive, was crucial to the development of automated docking procedures in spaceflight. As Chairman of Interkosmos, Petrov was a leader of the Soviet side of the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in which American and Soviet manned spacecraft docked in orbit. Photographed in 1969.
