Caption: Synthetic rubber production. A laboratory reactor vessel used in the production of synthetic rubber, seen in an industrial museum. The vessel was used in the process invented by Sergei Lebedev (1874-1934) which is based on the polymerisation of butadiene. The process is catalysed by metallic sodium and was invented in 1910 but didn't go into full industrial production until 1930. Photographed at the Moscow Polytechnic Museum, Russia.
