Caption: Disarmament. Explosion caused by the destruction of a missile at a site in Kazakhstan. The fireball comes from the solid-fuel rocket engine of the missile. This was part of the disarmament process agreed in the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty signed by the Soviet Union and USA in 1987. This treaty eliminated ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges between 500 and 5500 km, whether nuclear or conventionally armed. Photographed on 1 August 1988.
