Caption: Leonid Veniaminovich Keldysh (b.1931), Russian-Soviet physicist. Keldysh is an expert in condensed matter physics, particularly the quantum mechanical behaviour of a system under varying conditions (such as electrical or magnetic fields). The mathematical treatment of this is known as the Keldysh formalism. Keldysh was director of the Lebedev Physical Institute from 1988-94, and is now a professor at Texas A and M University in the USA. Photographed in 2001.
