Caption: Mikhail Sergeevich Babushkin (1893-1938), Russian polar aviator. Babushkin was born near Moscow and joined the Army in 1914. In 1915 he graduated from the Gatchina aviation school (one of the first established in Russia) and served as a military pilot. He is famous for his numerous flights into the polar regions. He took part in the search for the Italia airship that crashed on polar ice in 1928 and the search for the SS Chelyushkin that foundered in pack ice in 1933. In 1937 he flew to the geographic north pole to help establish a drifting ice research station, NP-1. Babushkin died in a flying accident in 1938. A district of Moscow and its metro station are named after him and he was one of the earliest recipients of the honour Hero of the Soviet Union .
