Caption: Cystoderma mushrooms (Cystoderma amianthinum) in grassy soil. These mushrooms are the edible fruiting bodies of this fungus. They have gills on the undersides of the caps from which ripe spores drift on the wind to form a new fungal body or mycelium. This fungus is found on heaths or in coniferous woodland, feeding on decaying vegetation in the soil. Photographed in Chigwell, Essex, England.
