Caption: Mushroom gills. Close-up of the gills (lower left) on the underside of a mushroom cap. This mushroom is the edible fruiting body of the milk cap fungus (Lactarius deterrimus). All milk caps exude a milky liquid when bruised or cut. Here the stem has been cut from the cap, leading to the dark orange staining seen at upper right. Microscopic spores ripen in, and are released from, the gills. They then drift on the wind to form a new fungal body (mycelium) in woodland soil near spruces or pines.
