Caption: Fairy ring fungus (Marasmius oreades) in a grassy field. This fungus produces a characteristic ring of brown, rounded mushrooms after heavy rainfall in summer and autumn. These hold the spores ready for dispersal. For the rest of the year the fungus is concealed underground in its mycelium form. It may produce the same ring for many years (some are known to be over 150 years old). The mushrooms are edible and tasty, but other toxic fungi also produces rings, so care is needed. M. oreades is native to Europe and North America.
