Caption: Many-coloured polypore (Coriolus versicolor) growing on a moss-covered tree trunk. This fungus feeds on dead wood, usually beech or oak, throughout the northern temperate zone. The caps seen here can reach over 10 centimetres in diameter and frequently overlap in layers. The colour of the concentric bands produced in the caps varies from one specimen to another, depending on location.
