Caption: Black helvella (Helvella lacunosa) fungi growing on a forest floor. The fruiting bodies of this fungus (seen here) are grey to blackish in colour. They are produced from summer to autumn in mixed woodland, especially on burnt ground, throughout western North America and in Europe. They are edible but taste poor. Also seen (white, left) is the crested coral fungus (Clavulina cristata).
