Caption: Vasco da Gama (1460-1524), Portuguese explorer whose voyage of 1497-9 found a maritime trade route around Africa to India, which helped make Portugal a world power. Here, he has his rod and robes of office, with a coat-of-arms at upper left and a knight's helmet at lower right. The caption (bottom) abbreviates his title of 'Dom' (Lord), awarded in 1499 on his return from India, and his office of Viceroy. In 1524, Vasco da Gama was appointed Viceroy of Portuguese India, a position he held from 5 September 1524 to his death at Cochin, India, from malaria on 24 December 1524. This lithograph is from the Lisbon Geographic Society.
