Caption: Vasco da Gama in Melinde, Kenya. Historical artwork of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1460-1524, right) meeting with the King of Melinde (Malindi, Kenya) in February 1498. This meeting was part of Vasco da Gama's first voyage of 1497-9 that opened up the maritime trading route from Europe to India. This meeting resulted in a trade agreement and the hire of a guide for the voyage to India. Vasco da Gama erected a coral pillar which can still be seen in Malindi today. In 1499 the Portuguese established a trading post in Malindi to break the journey to and from India. This artwork is from the Lisbon Geographic Society.
