Caption: Pear-shaped puffball fungi (Lycoperdon pyriforme). The brown fruiting bodies of this fungus grow in groups (as seen here) on rotten logs and stumps. They often appear to be growing in soil but are in fact attached to buried wood by white cords. They appear from summer to late autumn and are edible when young.
