Caption: Subarachnoid haemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of an axial section through the brain of a patient with a subarachnoid haematoma (light grey, centre left), a solid mass of blood below the arachnoid membrane, the middle of the three membranes that cover the brain. Bleeding (haemorrhage) in the brain occurs when a blood vessel, such as an artery, ruptures. It may be caused by a head injury, high blood pressure or vascular disease. The area of the brain supplied by the ruptured artery may die due to lack of oxygenated blood, leading to a stroke.
