Caption: William Leybourn (1626-1716), English land surveyor. Leybourn's most famous work was The Compleat Surveyor (1653), in which he described the process of surveying. The work became a standard used by property surveyors when drawing up maps of private estates. Leybourn also wrote works on astronomy and mathematics. This is the frontispiece portrait of Leybourn from the 1722 fifth edition of The Compleat Surveyor. The Latin text at bottom uses the Latin form of the name William.
