Caption: Three cosmologies, artwork published in Specula Physico-Mathematico-Historica (1696), an encyclopedia of science by the German monk and author Johann Zahn (1641-1707). The text is in Latin, while the diagrams show the three main cosmologies of the time: Ptolemaic (top), Copernican (lower left) and Tychonic (lower right). These are named respectively after the Ancient Greek astronomer Ptolemy, the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, and the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. The Copernican system is heliocentric, while the other two are geocentric.
