Caption: Fungal hypha. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a hypha of the fungus Penicillium sp. The vegetative body of a fungus has many individual branches, known as hyphae. The cell walls of the hyphae are composed of a skeleton of chitin and glucans, embedded in a matrix of polysaccharide sugars and glycoproteins. The group Penicillium contains many fungi, some of which were the original source of the antibiotic penicillin drugs. Magnification: x880 at 6x8.5cm size.
