Caption: Plant fungus resistance research. Researchers using an automated genotyping system to analyse genes from a population of rice plants. This is being done to help identify the genes responsible for resistance to the sheath blight fungus Rhizoctonia solani. This fungus can stay in the soil for 20 years, killing the plant’s cells each planting cycle and affecting yield and grain quality. Photographed at the University of Arkansas, USA.
