Caption: Penicillium fungal spores. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of fruiting bodies of the fungus Penicillium sp. These fruiting bodies (conidiophores) consist of branching chains of spores (conidia, bead-like structures). The mature spores can germinate into a new fungus. Some Penicillium fungi are the source of the antibiotic penicillin. They are also used in the fermentation of cheeses. Magnification unknown.
