Caption: Castillon Barrage and sundial. This dam is located in Castillon-sur-Verdon, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department of France. The reservoir behind the dam contains 150 million cubic metres of water. The dam was built between 1928 and 1948. It is 101 metres tall and 200 metres across, with a road running along the crest. Hydroelectric power station buildings and equipment are also seen. The outer surface of the dam has markings that enable it to be used as the world's largest sundial (see images C007/6119 and C007/6120).
