Caption: Crematorium furnace. The furnaces at crematoriums are designed to completely incinerate human bodies, including bone, and operate at very high temperatures (here, 850 degrees Celsius). Workers load the coffins into the furnace (from the trolley at right) and remove the ashes two hours later using the poles seen at left. The workers wear protective clothing designed to protect them from the heat. Each coffin has a heat-resistant disc to identify the ashes. Photographed in the Monumental Cemetery of Turin, Turin, Italy.
