Caption: Dead Sea, view from Space Shuttle, 1989. North is at right of image. The Dead Sea, located on the border between Jordan and Israel, is one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth. At 418 metres below sea level it is also the lowest point on Earth. the main body of the Dead Sea is seen far right, at centre are a complex of Jordanian salt evaporation ponds. The sodium chloride and potassium salts produced by evaporation are used for the chemical industry, salt for food and nutrition and for road de-icing.
