Caption: Johann Dippel (1673-1734), German alchemist, physician and theologian. Dippel first studied theology and wrote a number of theological works, some of which caused controversy. Turning to alchemy he experimented with obtaining oils from the destructive distillation of animal parts. He claimed a bone oil that he produced, known as Dippel's oil, was a universal medicine.
