Caption: Copper mine and chemical plant. This is the Copperhill copper mine and sulphuric acid plant in Copperhill, Tennessee, USA, in 1939. The sulphuric acid plant was built to convert sulphur dioxide, created as a by-product of open roast smelting of copper, to sulphuric acid. Before the plant was built the sulphur dioxide, which was released into the atmosphere, had killed off all the vegetation in the area.
